MONTH LONG OBSERVANCES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. For many, home is a place of love, warmth, and comfort. It’s somewhere that you know you will be surrounded by care and support, and a nice little break from the busyness of the real world. But for millions of others, home is anything but a sanctuary. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are victims of physical violence by a partner every year.

National Bullying Prevention Month
National Bullying Prevention Month in October reminds us of the harm bullying does. It’s always important to talk about the dangers of bullying and the trauma it can bring to its victims. However, this month, use your voice to speak up extra loud.
Research shows that bullying often leaves lasting negative effects on those who deal with it. By speaking out, spreading kindness, and finding your other roles in bullying prevention, you are making school settings, workplaces, and other environments safer and happier places. We must send a message that bullying will not be tolerated in our communities, and now is the perfect time to start.

National Crime Prevention Month
National Crime Prevention Month is an annual designation observed in October. During this time, the National Crime Prevention Council asks you to join in the commitment to “Take a Bite Out Of Crime.” Law enforcement budgets are shrinking across the country, so there’s a major role each of us can play to help keep our homes, schools, and communities safe. National Crime Prevention Month is all-encompassing. From stopping identity theft, to firearm safety, to gang prevention… there’s a lot of ground to cover when it comes to preventing illegal activity.

National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Month
October is a month designated to support the goals and ideals of National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Sudden cardiac arrest is often compared to a heart attack, but in reality, the two are very different. A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Sudden cardiac arrest is when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. To put it simply, a heart attack is a “circulation” failure, while cardiac arrest is “electrical” failure. In 95% of sudden cardiac cases, the victim is lost.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As you peruse the aisles of your favorite department store, you start to notice a trend: pink scarves, pink socks, pink shirts, and pink coffee mugs. Then pink blenders, pink vacuums, and is that a pink microwave?!? Ahh yes, the pink explosion is everywhere, and that can only mean one thing: October is upon us, and everyone is preparing for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a reminder that there is a gruesome disease that is out to get second base. These sweet, pink pastels are there to nudge us, saying “hey, don’t forget to examine your breasts, get your doctor to check them out too, and schedule your mammogram.” After all, about 1 in 8 U.S. women, and 1 in 1000 U.S. men will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime, and being proactive in this fight is crucial.

GETTING YOUR HOME READY FOR COOLER WEATHER
The temperature is dropping, and the nights are drawing in, which can only mean one thing — autumn is here. While it’s all too easy to cozy up indoors and prepare to hibernate, now’s the time to prepare your home. There’s a number of things you should do inside and out to prevent damage during the colder months.

CHECK THE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR OFFENDERS NEAR YOU
Love your neighborhood and embrace it for the diversity that you have! But always be cautious of who is in your neighborhood. If you do have an offender as a neighbor, get familiar with their face and crime. You can always call your local police department for additional information on an offender for a better piece of mind.

The NFPA's 2022 campaign for Fire Safety Month is "Fire Won't Wait, Plan Your Escape." - Suggesting that you have a FIRE SAFETY PLAN in place in case your home catches fire. It's also a great time to check your fire alarm batteries, make sure you have fire extinguishers, and have a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

The fall is officially here and it's looking BEAUTIFUL outside. This cooler weather, along with the leaves changing colors, it's the perfect time to take a hike, or even a gentle stroll around the park! Make sure you stay hydrated and dress appropriately for your walk!

TRUE CRIME = GLORIFICATION?
I love a good true crime podcast, documentaries based around true crime, and occasionally I will read a book about a serial killer. It's not that I idolize them, but I can't turn away from the train wreck of a person that they are. Do I idolize the killers? Absolutely not. But the psychology behind the killer fascinates me. What turned them into the monster that they have become?

Use caution during the Halloween season and take steps to prevent hand injuries when pumpkin carving.
Use Candy Corn to create a no-carve cute hedgehog pumpkin that is completely biodegradable!
Take a day and do some baking with the kids and have them decorate their own sugar cookies!
If your pets are part of the family, include them in some spooky family pics! Check Pinterest for some inspiration!

Family Watchdog wants to do something new and helpful with our newsletter. We want to highlight four random cases from National Center for Missing and Exploited Children so we can bring the awareness of our children missing in the United States. We highly encourage you to visit their website and search in your area to see what children are missing and what you can do to help. Do not approach missing children unless the child is in danger, always call 911 or 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678)
Each month we will randomly choose four missing children's cases from the NCMEC website. You can submit a missing children's case to us possibly highlight in one of our newsletters by emailing us.
